The Cube
What does the Cube do?
It shows how the conditions carp respond to are shaping up at your chosen location — now, over the next 12 hours and through the week — on a small screen by your desk or bivvy table.
It looks at the pressure trend, the thermal trend, wind, light, rain and time of day, and compares the result with 15 years of history for your area and time of year.
Does it predict whether I'll catch?
No. The band describes how today's conditions compare with the norm — it isn't a catch probability. Where the fish are, angling pressure, the water itself and your tactics all still matter. The Cube's job is to put a complex, changing set of conditions in context at a glance.
What's on the screens?
- Home: location, weather, time, sunrise and sunset, moon phase, the band right now and the best window, temperature, pressure, rain and wind.
- Contributing factors: what's helping and what's holding conditions back.
- Conditions insight: the next 12 hours in words and at a glance.
- Next 24 hrs: how conditions change hour by hour.
- Next 3 days: tomorrow and the two days after — each day's weather, band, high and low and pressure, with an hour-by-hour strip underneath.
- 7-day outlook: the week ahead.
- Device status: Wi-Fi, service and updates.
See Reading your Cube for what everything on each screen means.
You can choose which screens appear and how long each shows, on the Cube's own settings page. Home and Device status are always shown.
Where does the weather data come from?
Forecast data comes from Open-Meteo, which combines national weather models. Our servers turn it into the Cube's conditions every hour.
Does it work anywhere?
Anywhere in the UK. You choose the fishing location by searching for a town or village.
Conditions and bands
What do the bands mean?
The Cube's score is compared with the same time of year in your part of the UK, and lands in one of five bands:
So a GOOD day in March and a GOOD day in July can look very different on a thermometer — each is judged against what's normal for that time of year.
What is the "best window"?
The three hours in the next twelve when conditions are expected to be at their strongest, shown on the home screen (for example BEST 18:00–21:00).
What is the "thermal trend"?
Whether conditions have been warming or cooling, worked out from three weeks of air temperatures in your area. It's a trend — the Cube doesn't measure water temperature.
How often does it update?
Every hour, automatically. If it can't reach the internet it keeps showing its latest results for up to 12 hours, then shows No recent data until it's back online.
Service and renewals
What does the service include?
Your Cube comes with 12 months' service included, starting when you activate it. The service is the hourly conditions for your chosen location.
Software and security updates are separate from the service: every Cube is offered them until at least 31 December 2030, whether or not its service is renewed.
What happens when my service ends?
We'll email you before it ends. You can renew for £15 for a year — just £1.25 a month, about 4p a day. Renewals are paid once, up front, and never renew automatically.
If you don't renew, your Cube carries on working. It shows basic weather — now, the next 24 hours and the next 3 days — without the conditions ratings, bands or best window, and a screen with how to renew. Renew at any time and the full conditions come straight back.
Can I move the Cube to a different location?
Yes. Change the fishing location on the Cube's settings page at any time — it restarts and shows conditions for the new place.
I've sold, given away or bought a second-hand Cube, or changed my email address
The Cube and any service left on it can move to a different email address. Send us a message choosing Change of owner or email, with the Cube ID (on the Support tab of the Cube's own page) and the new email address.
We email a link to the new address. Whoever has the Cube then confirms its Cube ID and the place it's set to, with the Cube switched on. If we still have the previous owner's address, we let them know and the change completes after 7 days.
Selling or giving it away? Leave the Cube set up - the new owner doesn't need to start again.
Wi-Fi and power
What Wi-Fi does it need?
A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network with internet access and WPA2 security (a mixed WPA2/WPA3 setting is fine). Most home routers provide this automatically; see the setup guide if yours isn't listed. You can save up to 5 networks.
The Cube can't use a network that is 5 GHz only or WPA3 only, or guest and public Wi-Fi that needs a sign-in page.
How is it powered?
From any USB port (5 V) — a phone charger, computer or USB power bank. It uses very little power: about half a watt on average. Use a charger or power bank that carries the UKCA or CE mark and gives no more than 3 A at 5 V; an ordinary 5 V 2 A phone charger is ideal.
How much electricity does it use?
Very little. Over three days on a USB power meter the Cube averaged 0.47 W — about 11 Wh a day, or around 4 kWh a year.
That's less than £1.50 a year to run: about the same electricity as boiling the kettle once a week, and about the same power as a TV on standby.
Measured at 80% brightness by day and 15% at night (22:00 to 07:00), with all seven screens in rotation. Cost at the UK price cap electricity rate of 26.32p per kWh (October 2026), allowing for the charger. At full brightness all the time it uses a little more, about 0.65 W.
How long will it run on a power bank?
Roughly, at our measured average:
- 10,000 mAh — about 2½ days
- 20,000 mAh — about 5 days
- 30,000 mAh — about a week
- 50,000 mAh — about 2 weeks
Lower brightness and night mode make it last longer. Some power banks switch themselves off when very little power is drawn; if yours does, look for its low-current (trickle) mode, often a double press of the power button.
How much data does it use?
Very little — a small update each hour, so it's fine on a phone hotspot.
Does it update itself?
When new software is available the Cube shows it on screen and on its settings page, and you install it with one tap. It only installs updates signed by CarpVantage, and nothing is installed until you tap.
For an important security fix the Cube shows a red Security update message until it has been installed.
At the lake
Can I take it fishing?
Yes — save your phone's hotspot as a second Wi-Fi network before you go, and power the Cube from a USB power bank. The setup guide shows how.
Is it waterproof?
No — it's designed for indoor use. Keep it dry inside your bivvy, out of rain and direct sun.
Privacy and security
What data do you keep?
Your email address (to link you to your Cube and contact you about your service), the Cube's chosen fishing location, and technical records of its updates. We never sell your data. See our privacy notice.
How secure is the Cube?
It has no default passwords, only installs software signed by us, protects everything it exchanges with our servers from being altered or faked, and receives security updates until at least 31 December 2030. Found a problem? See our security page.
